About Us

The Monroe County Historical Society is a 501(c)(3) all-volunteer organization dedicated to discovering, preserving, and sharing the history and heritage of Monroe County.

We meet quarterly at 2:00pm on the second Sunday of March, June, September, and December. The location is usually the Monroe County Public Library in Union, but it sometimes varies when we visit places of exceptional interest. Changes in meeting place are announced in the newsletter, in the Monroe Watchman, and on this website.

Genealogical Services

Unfortunately, we do not provide them. As a society dedicated primarily to the preservation of historic sites and structures, we regret that our resources are inadequate to fulfill the many requests for research which we receive. You are welcome to visit personally to view our publications and resources (see the next heading about our museum); also, our publications may be purchased by mail.

This website provides a page where genealogical questions and information can be contributed.

Acknowledgements

We are grateful to the agencies, foundations, and individual donors who have provided much-needed support. Major assistance has been received from The Hollowell Foundation, the West Virginia Division of Culture and History, the West Virginia Division of Highways, and many others. Above all, we owe thanks to our volunteers, without whom nothing would happen.
